about

This small collection of songs had humble beginnings as a demo created for the Berkeley Rep theater company. I was asked to create some songs based on a script for a potential musical theater piece to be performed there at Berkeley Rep (the same theater that commissioned the Green Day musical, American Idiot, and Passing Strange)

This was happening at the time of the big economic crash and we quickly realized that the scope of the musical might be larger than a budget may allow. I sat on these songs for a while (years), knowing that they were good but not knowing what to do with them. Revisiting them this year I realized that the performances I had recorded by many of the musicians that helped with the project were just too good to sit on anymore. So here are these 4 songs, with further reworking and remixing since I created them quickly some years ago. Originally released May 2012, remastered for this re-vamped BC site.

Track Name: Lily's Song
Goodnight Daddy
Daddy, Say Goodnight
The Moon is Shining
So, I'm putting out...

the light that's burning
Brightly in my eyes
Blue and Silver
I, think that I might cry

Goodnight Daddy
It's time to say goodnight
I've been so tired
But don't put up a fight

The stars are shining
So high up in the sky
They burn like candles
I think that I might cry

Lay your face
near mine
and say goodbye

but you and I
were born
only to die

Sleep my baby
Sleep my babe
and I will sing
this moonlit lullaby

You and I
Were born
Only to Die

Sleep my baby
We'll keep my baby
the price can be so
Steep my baby

And let me sing
this moonlit Lullabye
Track Name: Carnival of Crime
when we were boys the ferris wheel was such a wild ride
we locked the kids in cages till they paid to get outside
but old st. paul he had it right all childhoods must end
our pranks and toys got left behind that we might become men

but oh the need to be amused, it cannot be outgrown
slash the throat of those accused
we men must have a carnival of our own

a carnival a carnival a carnival of crime

games of skill
are twice the thrill
when life is on the line

when we were boys the funhouse sent shivers up our spine
when we trapped the other kids and tied them up with twine
but old saint paul he had it right, one day you'll lose your head
we'll slap them motherfuckers down and throw them in the shed

we find that need to be amused, it has not been outgrown
I'll stake a claim upon the bruised
adults must have a carnival of their own

a carnival a carnival a carnival of crime

Life's too short
so have a snort
while you still have the time

cause where's the perk if it's all work
and toil night and day

and who could stand to be a man
it ya never get to play!
Track Name: Bassity's Song
The little fish eats the tiny fish
and the bigger fish eats the little fish
and the shark, well he eats all the fish
then the whale….he eats the shark

everyone's a kind of fish
it doesn't really matter which
we all end up in the same place
end up in the same place
in the dark

so drink all you can granger
screw who you can granger
watch the wheel and feel yourself alive

cause ain't no eater that don't get eaten
ain't no beater that don't get beaten
someday I'm sure I'm certain to get mine
until that day arrives well, I'll be fine

so drink all you can granger
screw who you can granger

watch the wheel and feel yourself alive

cause ain't no eater that don't get eaten
ain't no beater that don't get beaten
someday I'm sure I'm certain to get mine
until that day arrives ...
Track Name: In The Parlour House
CARSON
In the parlor house In the parlor house

VICKY
In the parlor house In the parlor house

DEB
In the parlor house
the voices are sweet
and the windows look out on a flowery street
and the men, doff their hats and say "Thank you and please"

VICKY
And there's always hot water to wash!

ALL
And there's always hot water to wash

CARSON
In the parlor house In the parlor house
we can call our own

JANET
In the parlor house In the parlor house
where the seeds are sewn

VICKY
In the parlor house there's music all day
and the talk in the parlor is witty and gay
And the men, kiss your hand and say "Well how do you do?"

JANET
And they always leave a gift by the door

ALL
And they always leave a gift by the door

CARSON
In the parlor house In the parlor house
we can call our own

TRISTA
In the parlor house In the parlor house
where the seeds are sewn

ALICE
In the parlor house you've been there before
Cause the men are the same once a girl shuts the door
There's the hand in the hair and the knees on the floor
There's a fist in a place where it's not been before
And a fist in the face if you get up to pee
and the hair and the scabs when you clean up the sheets

There's the words that can burn through the hardest of hearts
and the tearing that sours the sweetest of parts

ALL
But there must be a world where they're gentle and kind…
But there must be a world where they're gentle and kind...
Where they stroke your hair where they touch your face
where they whisper your name, oh, there must be a place
Where they stroke your hair where they touch your face
where they whisper your name, oh, there must be a place

ALL
In the parlor house
