Lily's Song

from The Barbary Coast EP by dren mcdonald

In the play, Lily is kidnapped as a very young child by the folks in the brothel/emporium as they dispense with her parents and steal their gold. She grows up there, and is emptied by the experience. In this scene she is performing her burlesque for the emporium crowd. Things get out of control and yet she still continues singing her song, not by strength of will, but by her strung out routine.

Goodnight Daddy
Daddy, Say Goodnight
The Moon is Shining
So, I'm putting out...

the light that's burning
Brightly in my eyes
Blue and Silver
I, think that I might cry

Goodnight Daddy
It's time to say goodnight
I've been so tired
But don't put up a fight

The stars are shining
So high up in the sky
They burn like candles
I think that I might cry

Lay your face
near mine
and say goodbye

but you and I
were born
only to die

Sleep my baby
Sleep my babe
and I will sing
this moonlit lullaby

You and I
Were born
Only to Die

Sleep my baby
We'll keep my baby
the price can be so
Steep my baby

And let me sing
this moonlit Lullabye
